About Burnarlook Llamas and Hazelnuts

Burnarlook Llamas and Hazelnuts is a small family farm on Mountain Road in Gembrook, in the Dandenong Ranges, run by owner David Nickell. The property's hazelnut grove was first planted in 2008 in Gembrook's red volcanic soil, and the farm also keeps a herd of llamas that visitors can meet during a visit.

Hazelnuts fall to the ground ready for harvest from late February through March, and the farm runs u-pick sessions by appointment during that window. Pickers are given a large 20 litre bucket, which holds around 8.5kg of nuts, for $40 plus $10 per person in the group. The farm particularly welcomes bigger bookings from community garden groups and clubs looking for a day out, arranged in advance. Picked hazelnuts can be dried and eaten raw, roasted, or ground into hazelnut flour. As visits run by appointment only, contact the farm directly by phone or email to check the harvest is underway and to book a time before making the trip to Gembrook.
